Why You Need a LinkedIn Profile

  • An effective resume is still a must-have for any serious job seeker...but it is no longer the only essential tool.
  • An increasing number of recruiters are using social media to find high-quality job candidates. 
  • A 2015 survey found that 92% of recruiters use social media in their recruiting process...and 87% specifically use LinkedIn. 
  • A 2017 survey identified a 40% increase in LinkedIn email traffic between recruiters & LinkedIn users. 
  • Any recruiter who is seriously interested in you will not only have read your resume, but will look you up on LinkedIn (or other social media). 
  • If they don't find you on LinkedIn, they may think your resume's qualifications are suspect. 
  • If they do find you on LinkedIn, they'll compare your resume to your profile for consistency and quality of content.​..so having  a great resume but a poor LinkedIn profile (or vice-versa) could sink your chances.

LinkedIn Profile vs. Resume

  • Both resumes and LinkedIn profiles address employment history...but they serve different purposes.  A resume communicates your job expertise.  A LinkedIn profile connects you to people with similar expertise.  So it stands to reason that some members of your network may also be potential competitors for the job you want.  To get noticed by recruiters, your LinkedIn profile has to be more effective than other profiles...and just doing a cut & paste of the employment history from your resume is NOT the best way to make your LinkedIn profile more effective.
  • One advantage a resume has over its LinkedIn relative is that resume content can be customized to a specific job or job market.  A LinkedIn profile is pretty much locked down...all LinkedIn profiles have the same "look" and the same sections in  the same order.  While this standard structure arguably makes it easier to create your LinkedIn profile, it also makes it harder for your qualifications and talents to stand out...and for recruiters who spend hours looking at scores of LinkedIn profiles every day, this fixed structure inflicts a mind-numbing sameness which makes it harder for them to spot quality candidates.
  • For years, the use of photos in resumes has been discouraged to avoid any biases that could violate anti-discrimination laws.  In being adopted as a recruiting tool, LinkedIn has thrown a monkey wrench into that arrangement.  LinkedIn profiles have a photo section "hardwired" into their templates.  Although a LinkedIn photo is optional, the reality is that recruiters give more attention to LinkedIn profiles with photos.  Translation: if a job candidate wants their LinkedIn profile to get noticed, a LinkedIn photo that (literally and figuratively) presents you in "the best light" is mandatory.

The bottom-line:  Resumes are here to stay, but today's professional job seeker needs BOTH an effective resume AND an effective LinkedIn profile.  BOTH need to be awesome and writing them by yourself is not easy.
